U.S. Soccer Referee Directives
The ten (10) Directives are provided to assist in the management of games at the highest levels and, hence, are of interest not only to match officials but coaches and administrators as well. The objective of the Directives is to provide a more unified and consistent approach in key areas of game management.

U.S. Soccer's Advice to New Referees focuses on how to prepare for and deal with the everyday challenges of being an official and provides practical advice that empowers new referees to succeed and have fun. The class you took taught you about the Laws of the Game but there is still a lot to learn in order to succeed as a referee. This information has been put together based on feedback from thousands of new referees just like you and with help from experienced referees who started out where you are now. Proper signaling is important for officials at all levels of the game. The specific signals used by the referee are intended to communicate decisions and instructions so it's vital that these signals be performed clearly and accurately. U.S. Soccer recommends that referees of all levels follow these guidelines to provide consistency and clarity when delivering information and directions to other members of the officiating team, players, substitutes, team officials, and even spectators.
